Venetian Plaster
Lime-based finishes with depth and movement - from soft matte textures to polished, marble-like sheen.
Soft movement, subtle depth
Venetian plaster is a hand-trowelled finish applied in thin layers, creating natural tonal variation that shifts with the light. It can appear understated and modern or richly textured and old-world, depending on the technique and finish you choose. No matter the style, Venetian plaster adds a sense of depth, artistry, and luxury to any surface.
Venetian Plaster Finish Options
- Matte Mineral Texture: A velvety, stone-like matte look that brings organic warmth and a contemporary feel.
- Limewash Effect: Soft, cloudy movements in the plaster for an antiqued patina reminiscent of classic European villas.
- Polished Plaster: A higher-sheen finish, burnished to resemble marble - perfect for adding light and a luxe touch to feature walls.
- Statement Applications: From grand entry walls to decorative ceilings or fireplace surrounds, Venetian plaster makes a stunning statement wherever it's applied.
How we approach a Venetian Plaster Finish
- Confirm Surface Readiness: We ensure your wall or ceiling is properly prepared (flat, smooth, and primed) for a flawless Venetian plaster application.
- Base Coat Preparation: A preparatory base or plaster undercoat is applied to create an ideal canvas and to promote adhesion for the finish layers.
- Layered Plaster Application: Our craftsmen hand-apply multiple coats of Venetian plaster, using skilled trowel techniques to build up the desired texture, movement, and sheen.
- Finishing & Sealing: Once the plaster reaches the perfect look, we finalise it with the appropriate topcoat by sealing or waxing the surface to protect it and enhance its depth/shine as needed.

Venetian Plaster Care & Durability
We tailor each Venetian plaster finish to balance beauty with practicality. Generally, these finishes are best for feature areas and lower-touch surfaces, but with the right seal or wax, many can handle the demands of daily life. We will recommend the appropriate level of protection for your particular plaster finish. For high-traffic areas, a protective topcoat can be applied to ensure durability. Routine care is simple: dust occasionally with a soft cloth, and if needed, wipe gently with a damp cloth avoiding harsh cleaners or abrasives to maintain the plasters character.
Venetian Plaster FAQs
Is Venetian plaster suitable for bathrooms?
For wet areas we advise using Microcement which is 100% waterproof on every layer. We will advise on the best product if you're aiming for this look in a wet area.
What is the difference between limewash and Venetian plaster?
Limewash is a thin, breathable paint-like coating that gives a soft, mottled look on walls. Venetian plaster is a thicker, trowel-applied plaster that builds up depth and can be polished to a shine. Essentially, limewash offers a gentle wash of colour, whereas Venetian plaster creates a more substantial textured or polished surface.
Can you match a reference finish from a photo?
Usually, yes. We often create custom sample boards to replicate the colour, movement, and sheen you have in mind. This way, you can preview and approve the exact Venetian plaster finish before we apply it to your space.
How do I clean it?
Most plaster finishes are low maintenance. For dust, simply wipe with a dry, soft cloth or feather duster. For any smudges or marks, use a damp soft cloth and gently dab (avoid excessive water). Always steer clear of abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals, as they can dull or damage the plasters sealed surface.
